New Advances on Animal Rghts

The Article, “A Change of Heart about Animals” by Jeremy Rifkin mainly emphasizes the similarities between humans and animals and how the similarities have increased throughout the years with more advanced research. One of Rifkin’s claims is that animals are more like humans than we have previously realized. A common belief was that animals could not feel emotion, and if they could it was very slight. Modern research shows animals feel many emotions that humans do too including grief, loneliness, pain, suffering and even feel love. Rifkin also claims that Animals well being is not only inhuman to lock them up, but that it is also effecting they health. Many fast food restaurants are the ones that are funding research on animal due to the pressure from animal rights activists. Researches funded by McDonalds have found that pigs need affection and are easily depressed if left alone and denied interaction time with humans or other pigs. Researchers have also found that animals mental state can actually effect their health which could create bad meat. Rifkin uses guilt to try and persuade his reader. This is a very effective tool especially the way Rifkin uses it. Rifkin makes many comparisons of animals to humans, this makes the reader gain sympathy for the animals in the research and the ones being controlled by slaughter houses. Rifkin also uses the opposite option and proves it wrong by showing how animals feel many emotions that humans do, which is a common belief brought on in society that these animals do not feel emotion so it I okay to mistreat them as the United States has been doing.

Gun Control

In the article “Do We have the Courage to Stop This,” by Nicholas Kristof, the author’s claims were very strong and adamant. This makes the author seem passionate about the topic which could make the text biased. The main type of evidence Kristof used was statistical facts. He brought up many points on why guns should be controlled with facts about death rates and comparisons to other deadly weapons like vehicles. One strategy that Kristof uses in his paper was organizing his text in short two to four sentence paragraphs. This is helpful to the reader to break up the text and not get lost in an overflow of words. Another strategy Kristof uses is refuting opposing views with evidence. Kristof brings up key arguments on the opposing view that may identify with readers and then brings up evidnce to support why that view is incorrect and his view is more accurate. This is a very helpful tool to help persuade readers and possibly change readers views to his own which is usually the goal. Another strategy that the author uses is how he frames the issue discussed in the article. The main issue is regulated gun control and how it needs to be more strict. Kristof frames the issue by relating it as being an issue that effects every readers life. By scaring the reader into thinking his or her life is in danger. This also persuades readers to take Kristof’s view as the right and correct view. The tone the author uses is also very important. Kristof’s tone is very assertive as if the reader would be idiotic to not agree with him. The author appeals more to the every day person trying to have them help him persuade authorities to change laws and make differences. Kristof is appealing as an activist trying to prove his point, and make a change in society. This can be very effective because it makes the reader feel like they have power.

A Little Bit About Myself

At the moment my prospective major is economics. I am not sure I will keep this major because I am unsure what I do to do with my life or my career. I used the terms evidence and claims in my english, history, and science classes when writing essays and lab reports. The word claim I have used to discribe what someone has said and believes to be correct. I have used the word evidence to support a hypothesis or a thesis statement. Some writing activities that I enjoy on my free time is tweeting and I like writing and reading but I normally do not have much time for free time in addition to school work so I do not do a lot of writing on my own. When I do have time to tweet and journal I like to write what I am thinking and feeling because I like to look back later to see what I was thinking and feeling at the time. I like to write free response essay and assignments because it is easy for me to get a flow of words going. When writing a formal essay it is hard for me to start I have so much going on in my head it is hard to choose the perfect sentence to individually choose.
